Boiler Decoder is a plain-English library of boiler fault codes for UK homes. When your boiler shows a code such as F28, EA 227 or L2, we explain what it means, what usually causes it, what you can safely check yourself and when you need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Why we built this site
Boiler fault codes are short and cryptic. They are written for engineers, and the manual that explains them is often lost, out of date or buried in a drawer. That is not much help at seven in the morning in January, with no heating, no hot water and a flashing display.
Most people want to answer one question quickly: is this something I can sort out myself, like low pressure or a frozen condensate pipe, or do I need to book an engineer? Knowing the answer before you pay for a call-out can save money. Just as often, it stops people from trying something that is not safe. We wrote this site to answer that question clearly for the most common codes on the boiler brands found in UK homes, including Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Baxi, Glow-worm, Viessmann, Vokera and Potterton.
Who writes Boiler Decoder
Boiler Decoder is written and run by Muhammad Mustafa. I started it after seeing how hard it is for ordinary households to find a clear, honest answer when a boiler shows a fault code, and how often people either pay for a call-out they did not need or try a fix that is not safe.
I am not a Gas Safe registered engineer, and I do not pretend to be one. My job is research and writing: reading the manufacturers' manuals and fault code tables, checking each meaning against more than one source, and turning that into plain-English pages that tell you what a code means, what you can safely check and when to call a professional. Where a job involves gas, electrics or anything inside the boiler casing, every page says clearly that it needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How we research our content
Every code page starts with the manufacturer's own documentation: user manuals, installation and servicing instructions, and published fault code tables written for installers. We cross-check meanings against more than one source, because the same code can mean slightly different things on different models or software versions. Where that happens, we say so on the page rather than guess.
Repair cost guidance reflects typical UK prices for parts and labour and is always shown as a range. Pages are dated so you can see when they were last reviewed, and we update them when we find better information or when a reader points out a problem.
Our editorial principles
- Safety first. We never advise opening the boiler casing or touching gas, electrical or flue components. The only steps we suggest are ones manufacturers expect homeowners to carry out, such as checking the pressure gauge, using the filling loop, pressing reset or thawing a frozen condensate pipe.
- Clear labels. Each code is marked as a likely DIY fix, something worth checking first, or a job for an engineer, so you can see at a glance where you stand.
- Honest prices. Costs are typical ranges, not quotes. An engineer will price the work once they have seen your boiler.
- Plain English. We avoid jargon where we can and explain it where we cannot.

Boiler Decoder is an independent information website. We are not a boiler manufacturer, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Baxi or any other brand we write about. We are not Gas Safe registered engineers, and nothing on this site is a substitute for an inspection by one. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 (0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland).
How the site is funded
The site is free to use and is paid for by advertising, including ads served by Google. In future we may also include affiliate links, for example to products or quote services, and we will make it clear when we do. Advertising and any commercial relationship will never influence our safety advice or how we describe a fault.
Corrections
We work hard to get things right, but models and software change. If you spot an error, a missing code or advice that does not match your boiler's manual, please contact us with the make, model and code shown. We read every report and correct pages where needed.
