F76 means a safety device built into your Vaillant's main heat exchanger has been triggered, or the boiler thinks it has. That is a lockout you should not try to work round. It might be nothing more than a poor connection, but it can also mean the heat exchanger itself has failed, so it needs an engineer's diagnosis.
What F76 means
The primary heat exchanger is the part where the burner's heat passes into the water. On the boilers that use F76, it carries a safety fuse that responds if the heat exchanger gets too hot. Once that protection has acted, the boiler shuts down and shows F76. It will not fire again until the engineer has found and dealt with the reason, which is the point of the device: it stops a heat exchanger that may already be under strain from being pushed any further.
Vaillant's ecoTEC plus LPG installation and maintenance instructions (document 0020239015) describe the code as "Overheating protection on primary heat exchanger has responded". The possible causes listed are the cable or cable connections for the safety fuse in the primary heat exchanger, or the primary heat exchanger being defective. The manual does not say what to do after the protection has acted, so treat it as an engineer-only fault.
Which Vaillant boilers show F76
We found F76 in only one Vaillant document, the instructions for the ecoTEC plus VU 246/6-5 OVZ (P-GB), an open-vent regular boiler built to run on LPG. It is absent from the other Vaillant fault tables we checked:
| Vaillant document | Models | F76 listed? |
|---|---|---|
| ecoTEC plus LPG, 0020239015 | VU 246/6-5 OVZ (P-GB) | Yes |
| ecoTEC plus, 0020244997 | VU and VUW ../5-5, including the 825 to 838 combis | No (the table goes from F.75 to F.77) |
| ecoTEC pro, 0020244995 | ecoTEC pro 24 and 28 combis | No |
| ecoTEC plus, 0020238195 (2021) | VU ../6-5 OVZ natural gas regular boilers | No |
If your boiler is not the LPG model and the display seems to show F76, check the model plate and your own manual, and read the display again carefully. The code beside it, F75, is a different fault entirely.
How the overheating protection differs from other Vaillant overheat codes
Vaillant boilers have more than one layer of overheat protection. The most familiar is F20, which means the safety temperature limiter has tripped. F76 is specific to a safety fuse on the primary heat exchanger of the LPG model. Whatever made the heat exchanger hot enough to trip it, or whatever made the boiler think it had tripped, needs finding before the boiler runs again.
Our guide to the boiler heat exchanger explains what this part does and the usual signs of trouble.
What you can do safely
- Write down the code and anything else on the display. The LPG manual says the boiler stores the last 10 fault messages, so the engineer can also check the history.
- Look under the boiler, without touching anything inside, for any sign of water dripping or staining.
- You can try one reset. Vaillant's LPG manual says to press and hold the reset button for more than three seconds. If F76 returns, do not keep trying.
- Leave the boiler switched off and book an engineer. Mention that it is an LPG boiler when you call.
Do not remove the casing or try to reach the heat exchanger, fuse or wiring. If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the LPG tank or cylinder if it is safe to do so, ventilate the room and call your LPG supplier's emergency number. For mains gas, the National Gas Emergency Service number is 0800 111 999.
What the engineer will check
Following Vaillant's two causes, the engineer will start with the cheaper possibility: the cable and connections running to the safety fuse on the heat exchanger. A loose, corroded or damaged connection can make the boiler think the protection has acted when it has not. If the wiring is sound, attention turns to the heat exchanger itself and to why it overheated.
Because this is an LPG appliance, the engineer must be Gas Safe registered for LPG work as well as for the type of boiler. That is shown on the back of their Gas Safe ID card, so it is worth checking when they arrive.
If the heat exchanger does have to be replaced, ask the engineer what made it overheat in the first place, so the new part is not exposed to the same problem. It also helps to ask for the codes in the fault memory to be noted on your invoice, which gives the next engineer a record if F76 ever returns. Our LPG boiler guide covers what is different about owning one.
Typical repair costs in the UK
| Job | Typical UK cost |
|---|---|
| Engineer call-out and diagnosis | Typically £60 to £150 |
| Repairing the cable or connections to the safety fuse | Typically £100 to £180 |
| Main heat exchanger replacement | Typically £400 to £800 |
A heat exchanger replacement is one of the largest repairs a boiler can need. If your ecoTEC plus LPG is out of warranty and the engineer confirms the heat exchanger has failed, ask for a written quote and compare it with the cost of a new boiler before agreeing. Our guide on whether to repair or replace a boiler sets out the questions to ask. If the boiler is still under Vaillant's warranty, contact Vaillant or your installer before booking anyone else, so you do not affect any claim.
